Jana's Banana Bread

1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 cup margarine or butter, softened
2 extra large eggs
1 1/2 cups mashed ripe bananas (3 to 4 medium)
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
